recent beauty essentials: August

In the midst of the dog days of summer, I'm finding myself slipping into the simplest of beauty routines. When the heat makes me lethargic (ahem, lazy), I admittedly often can't be bothered to frequently wash my hair or follow my usual make-up regimen. This need relative effortlessness this summer has led me to some of my favorite beauty products to date.

Dry shampoo, the flat-haired girl's best friend. Given that my hair is so long and heavy, it starts losing volume at the roots the day after I wash it, but a little bit of the right product gives it new life. After trying a handful of different dry shampoos throughout the summer without being much impressed, I received this Batiste Dry Shampoo in my August Ipsy Glam Bag, and it's probably the only dry shampoo I'll ever buy again. Not only is it thoroughly effective in making my hair feel fresh, clean, and voluminous, the "floral and fruity" blush scent is so dreamy.

Another introduction made to me by Ipsy was this IT Cosmetics Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil. Even on days when I wear only minimal makeup, I like to fill in my eyebrows, and this little pencil has been so ideal. While it wipes off easily during any missteps in application, it keeps my brows in line on even the hottest, most humid days. It's lauded as "award-winning" on the website, and it comes highly recommended by a professional make-up artist friend of mine (the genius behind this look). Sadly, I'm afraid I only have a few applications left before my pencil is gone, so I know I'll be purchasing a new one in the near future. If you're interested in trying out an Ipsy subscription, you can sign up here. I highly recommend it if you're interested in trying out new beauty products; at only $10/month, it's a great bang for your buck.

Saving the best for last, I must tell you about Little Barn Apothecary's Aloe + Rosewater Balance Mist. This stuff is liquid gold, perfect for use as post-wash toning, make-up setting, or mid-day refreshing. Not only is it locally produced by my friends Brad and Joshua, it's made of all-natural ingredients, including rose, aloe, hibiscus, and witch hazel. I can't tell you how glorious this makes my skin feel when I spritz my face on a scorching afternoon, and my friends have praised it for keeping redness at bay. This is certainly the MVP of my summer beauty arsenal.
